VGU is the first public university to be established as a new model university, following German quality and standards. Implementing the Governmental Resolution on comprehensive reform of the higher education sector in Vietnam, VGU is the outcome of bilateral academic cooperation between the Vietnamese and German Governments, represented by the Ministry of Training and Education (MoET), the Hessen State of Science, Higher Education and the Arts (HMWK), and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

VGU officially commenced operation on 10 September 2008, marked by the first enrolment of 35 students to the bachelor’s program of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EEIT) and now named as Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).

The Charter issued by the Prime Minister of Vietnam governs VGU’s organizational structure and daily operation. In the course of its development, VGU has received generous support from the Consortium of 36 German universities who are the academic backbone in providing study programs, sending their professors to the VGU and granting the degree as well as the huge support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the World University Service (WUS).

The VGU’s New University Model Project (NMP) was initiated in 2010, two years after its establishment, with a total investment of 200 million USD through a preferential credit provided by the World Bank and the Vietnamese Government’s counterpart funding for building up VGU’s modern governance and management system and its new campus. The VGU’s NMP consists of four components: (1) Policy and Regulatory Framework; (2) Academic and Research Development; (3) Campus and Facilities Development; and (4) Project Management, Monitoring and Evaluation. Within the framework of component (3), a 50.5 hectare campus with state-of-the-art laboratories, learning and teaching facilities is being constructed. The VGU’s new campus is expected to be ready for effective use by late 2020.

What we offer

VGU offers selected Bachelor and Masters Programs, taken from the strongest engineering and economic science areas of Germany. The study programs are jointly run between VGU and our German partner universities who ensure their high-quality training by sending experienced professors and experts to give lectures at VGU. Our students receive an excellent, internationally competitive education of German standards, and thus, are provided with the best opportunities on the job market.

At VGU, you will experience a unique teaching and learning environment. The curricula of study programs offered at VGU follow largely those of respective German partner universities. Our academic approach is the integration of academic training and research, where students can learn proactively and work directly with their faculty on hands-on projects to gain an in-depth knowledge of subject matters and, at the same time, fostering innovative ideas and problem-solving capabilities. Such approach combined with our highly competent and experienced German and multinational faculty members and the use of English as teaching language further enhances students’ learning experience and success as global citizens.

In addition to very competitive tuition fees, VGU offers a wide range of scholarships to its students, including international students who achieve excellent academic performance. Our expanding network of industrial partners furthermore facilitates access to industry scholarships and internship opportunities for students. At present, VGU offers its students opportunities to study at German partner universities for at least one semester or to continue with postgraduate programs, Master or Ph.D., in Germany or other countries worldwide.

VGU graduates receive internationally recognized degrees granted by VGU and the respective German partner universities. The quality of education and the supporting environment have resulted in a strong and promising employment market for VGU graduates. Many graduates have been successful in their professional careers while other graduates choose to continue their academic pathway to doctorate and advanced degrees.
