Overview
About BME Program
The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program was established at IU on March 16, 2009. Up to this point in time, the notion of BME was not well known in Vietnam. By contrast, Biotechnology has been well developed as a separate field. IU put efforts to complete this void by creating the first BME Program in Vietnam. The BME activities at IU therefore do not include those in biotechnology which are assumed by the School of Biotechnology of IU.
The BME undergraduate program was accredited by VNU-HCM in 2009 with the Education and Training Code of 52.42.02.04.In April 2010, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) accredited this undergraduate degree and assigned it the code number 52.52.02.12.Since January 2018, it has changed to 7.52.02.12.This program delivers the degree called “Kỹ Sư Kỹ Thuật Y Sinh” in Vietnamese (literally “Engineer in Biomedical Engineering”) and “Bachelor of Engineering in BME (BE BME)” in English.
In October 2015, the BME program at IU was assessed by the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) .The outcome was that it was ranked first in Vietnam and second in ASEAN among all programs that had been assessed, including those in science, engineering, business and humanity.
In December 2018, the BME program was accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, USA).
Program Educational Objectives
The BME undergraduate program is designed to give students a solid science and engineering foundation, with emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach to scientific research and practical skills. Graduates of the program will:
- independently identify and tackle open-ended biomedical engineering problems to maximize their organizational and social benefits;
- continuously expand their knowledge, be creative and innovative in their contributions to the field of biomedical engineering;
- perform, manage, or lead original engineering design and research projects in an ethical and professional manner; carry this out at the highest levels in industry, research laboratories, medical schools, graduate schools, and other public and private sectors.
Career Opportunities
After completing our undergraduate program, students can become:
- Clinical engineers who are well versed in the principles and operations of medical equipment used in hospitals and highly competent in supporting physicians in clinical treatments, and in advanced research
- Entrepreneurs capable of developing and creating successful medical devices in the market, forming start-ups and managing healthcare establishments
- Researchers in scientific institutions capable of working at the interface between Health Science, Engineering and Technology
- Science and technology educators promoting Biomedical Engineering as an emerging field.
